FAQ

What is Orthokeratology/Ortho-K contact lenses?

Orthokeratology or ortho-k, is a contact lens you wear at night and remove in the morning. While you sleep, the specially designed lens gently reshapes the cornea of your eye to correct your vision. Ortho-K is a therapy that has been practiced and researched for over 30 years.

The main purpose of orthokeratology lenses is to:

1. Correct refractive errors (primarily near sightedness, but also astigmatism and hyperopia).
2. To slow the progression of childhood myopia.

Who is the Ideal candidate for Orthokeratology contact lenses?

Ortho-K works best if you are short-sighted with low levels of astigmatism. Studies have shown that Ortho-K can slow down the progression of myopia in young children. The ortho-k procedure requires a minimum of 6 consecutive hours to be consistently effective. An ideal candidate would have a consistent sleeping pattern.

What results to expect from Orthokeratology?

Eye care practitioners usually aim for 20/20 vision after ortho-k, but 20/40 vision is often considered an acceptable outcome (as it meets the Australian driving standards) .

Is Orthokeratology safe?

Good Hygiene must be kept for a majority of contact lenses as the lenses need to be regularly cleaned to avoid corneal complications and eye infections.

Who Fits Orthokeratology lenses?

Orthokeratology is a specialised type of custom contact lens fitting and not all eye doctors who fit contact lenses also fit ortho-k lenses.

Which is better, Orthokeratology or Refractive Surgery?

If you are looking to reduce your dependence on glasses and contact lenses, and don't mind wearing lenses to sleep at night, Orthokeratology is an excellent option. Orthokeratology is non-invasive and the effects are temporary and reversible. If you are anxious about having surgery on your eyes and want an alternative to contact lenses, Ortho-K is a great way of correcting your vision.
